Book Review: Angels on Your Side

Angels on Your Side is not just a book that you can read with children who may be fearful. It’s also a book that could easily double as a Bible study about angels. It is chock full of references pointing to different instances of angels carrying out God’s plan for His people.

Rommel Ruiz’s exciting illustrations in this book come to life with the included 3d glasses.

The main story is one that children of all ages can relate to. It’s not scary just for the sake of being scary—something to get the point across but may never actually happen to our kids. Rather, it showcases what many children have already experienced: a thunderstorm, being in a new place for the first time (both of which are part of the story), having a nightmare, fear of the dark, etc. This is a great book to give them more stories in their mental arsenal of how God is with us and protects us, not to mention the multitude of verses that they can hide in their hearts and meditate on.

The book touches on how God doesn’t always use angels. There are still trials we must go through and they are still a reflection of His love for us. Jesus, our ultimate example, could have called angels to His side at the cross, but He didn’t. He knew He had to fulfill the promise. Whether or not we understand, we know that God is still in control.

I love that the end of the book (spoiler alert!) gives a very clear presentation of the gospel. It led to another great talk in the ongoing conversation with our oldest son. We are blessed to serve and worship the One who created us and knows the plans He has for us. We can rest in the assurance that He will not leave us or forsake us.
